Pike County leaders blame national park superintendent for pipeline detour
Pocono Record
Beth Brelje
June 7
Angry over a gas pipeline route detouring around the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Pike County Commissioners are calling for the transfer of park Superintendent John Donahue.
The strong sentiment stems from the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company plan to cut a new seven-mile pipeline loop through unspoiled forest and private properties in Pike in order to avoid one mile in the park. Tennessee already has a pipeline on that mile of park land, and has had a right of way there allowing for pipeline improvements since 1955, a decade before the park existed.

Protect Chester County from natural gas pipeline
Daily Local
Opinion
June 7
A note on pipeline fast tracking was sent to me recently, although I’ve known about the subject for quite some time. The real issue here is “fracking” in the state of Pennsylvania.
The most economical way to get gas from the Marcellus areas of western and upstate Pennsylvania is through pipelines to the Delaware River. Chester County is right in the middle.

The Morning Note: Is Tom Corbett's tax giveaway to Shell Oil a good investment or corporate welfare?
Express-Times
Tony Rhodin
June 6
[...]Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett wants to give Royal Dutch Shell, one of the richest companies in the world, a $1.7 billion tax break to build a plant in western Pennsylvania. And it would be built in a Keystone Opportunity Zone, meaning it could have avoided taxes before the governor piled on the bonus break, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

90.5 Essential Public Radio
Noah Brode
June 5
An Allegheny County Councilman would like to know how much natural gas lies beneath the county’s park system, and exactly how much money that gas is worth.
Councilman Matt Drozd (R-District 1) has introduced legislation calling for an inventory of the county’s mineral resources, especially regarding the Marcellus Shale gas formation.

Gov. Tom Corbett offers too much in 'Shell game'
Patriot-News
Editorial
June 7
At the heart of economics and business is cost-benefit analysis, the notion that the benefits of an action or investment should outweigh the costs.
No one can deny that bringing a petrochemical refinery — often called a “cracker” plant — to southwestern Pennsylvania would be a strong asset to the state’s manufacturing base. But any reasonable person should ask: at what cost?

Pennsylvania counties cashing in on Marcellus Shale drilling revenues
Post-Gazette
Janice Crompton
June 7
When the state Legislature passed Act 13 in February, county and local officials across the state expressed some excitement and more than a little trepidation over whether impact fees for Marcellus Shale gas well drilling would go far enough to compensate for the disruptions and damage blamed on drilling for the valuable resource over the past five or so years.

HARRISBURG -- Did the state overreach in its new law outlining where drilling sites and compressor stations can be located, or are municipal officials out of bounds in seeking to retain the ability to manage the industry themselves?
