Protect our state forests

There are hundreds of miles of gas and water lines being carved as permanent destruction to our forests across the state. They are everywhere one looks.
With a possible 30 percent reduction in drilling in our area next year, it will give UGI Corp. and others time to construct a $1 billion, 200-mile long gas pipeline to markets south toward Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as well as the $250 million MARC I pipeline to New York State, and the latest $380 million gas pipeline expansion to its Lycoming County pipeline to bring the bountiful gas production to the Northeast and New England, where heating oil is used extensively.

Given a chance for tax-free status, petrochemical plants that come to Pennsylvania also might qualify for tax refunds from a $1.65 billion pool of money without having to guarantee jobs under a plan from Gov. Tom Corbett's administration.

Scientist delves into impact of drilling on birds
Times-Tribune
Michael Iorfino
June 5
Jeffrey Stratford, Ph.D., has been fascinated by birds since a young age.
The biologist at Wilkes University observed their tendencies and watched them grow.
Now, with the proliferation of natural gas drilling in the region, he's watching something else.
Dr. Stratford is catching birds and taking blood samples to determine whether they have been affected by the surface water contaminants created by gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale region.

Rep. Greg Vitali, D-Delaware, wants environmental programs to receive more funding in Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed 2012-2013 budget.
At a Capitol news conference earlier today, Vitali said the money for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) could come from new state revenue unaccounted for in Corbett’s $27.14 billion proposal.
Senate Republicans have already delegated some of that $800 million in new tax revenue to restore funding for education, social welfare and some farmland and open space programs. The Senate proposal increases state spending to $27.65 billion.
